7/10-11/2010 Riffe Lake
Club Tournament Interviews

We had 16 boats with 25 members and guests fishing Riffe Lake where the water temperatures were right around 70 degrees, the lake at full pool and air temperatures right around 80 degrees.  As usual the wind blew starting in the late morning.  The catch was good with seven limits on Saturday and five on Sunday with quite a few good fish brought to the scales.  There were 90 fish brought to the scales with a 3.6 average per angler for 6.6 pounds on Saturday and 71 fish ( with 3 fewer anglers ) brought to the scales with a 3.2 fish per angler for  6.5 pounds on Sunday.  So the fishing was about the equal for both days.  All in all it was one of the best Riffe Lake club tournaments.

In first place with 24.82 pounds was Chris Ferry.  Chris said,  "As with most of the Riffe lake tournaments in past everyone knows the Kosmos end of the lake is going to be the place to be. I fished with Travis Archer Auburn Sports and Marine Jr. Pro-staff member. With no chance to prefish we went over a game plan and past results. We came to the conclusion that the fish were going to be post spawn and with a few calls found that the lake was very full for this time of year, which made for an exciting boat ride with all the floating wood. We started Saturday near the new boat ramp with no results then proceeded to run to the Kosmos flat. Travis proceeded to catch two 3 lb fish on back to back casts to start out the morning then his third fish all on a Berkley power minnow. Finally figured out what exactly the fish were holding on an I proceeded to catch 3 fish on a dropshot with a sniper bolt. The wind by 10:30 blew us off the flat ,we went back to our starting area and Travis caught his 4th fish. I made a decision to run back to the dam which I knew had not produced many fish in the past. I was lucky enough to catch 2 more fish that day. Sunday we made the decision to fish the flat all day no matter how hard the wind was going to blow. The day started out just like the day before Travis catching 3 fish on a dropshot. We finally settled in and kept working our area back and forth waiting for it to reload. I ended up catching 8 fish total and Travis caught 4 we lost only 2 fish the whole weekend. Our fish on Saturday came from 12-15' on Sunday 6-12'. I am glad to say that everyone was very respectful in letting me have my water after seeing where I was fishing all day Saturday. Thanks guys!"

In second place with 21.06 pounds was Mike Hostetter.  Hoss fished both the Kosmos Flat and Taidnapaum area when the wind blew too hard to fish the Kosmos flat.  Fishing with Bob Graf he was impressed with how a 21 foot Triton took the rough water in comparison to his small Ranger.  Hoss said the fish were scattered and that  he caught all of his fish dropshoting in 13 feet on Sunday and between 6 and 15 feet on Saturday.

In third place with 20.46 pounds was Shawn McDaniel.  Shawn said," Saturday we caught some of our fish on a ledge in 17 to 20 feet.  W e also found some fish on gradual sloping banks with rock in the same depths.  Sunday we did the same thing but the ledge was lacking fish so we stuck to our second area for the rest of the day and were both able to catch a limit and cull a couple times.  The fish usually bit on a slack line.  They didn't want the bait moving at all which was hard to do in the 2 to 3 ft rollers. The bigger fish were caught dragging tubes and football heads.  A dropshot also worked well."

Finishing in fourth with 18.51 pounds was Travis Archer.  See Chris Ferry.

Rounding out the top five was Ken  Ganancial with 16.23 pounds.  Kenny said, "Both days we started on  Kosmos flat , fishing in 10ft of water with deeper water adjacent to it  (20 feet). We moved around a lot trying to hide from the winds as it made fishing the 10 foot flat near impossible .  At the end of each day we spent the last hour fishing a r in 10-13 feet of water by the Mossey Rock launch and were able to catch 1 or 2 each day there.  All our fish were caught on a sniper bolt or a tube with a football head jig inside."
